Remembering Tony Keel
Remembering Tony Keel.
by Robin Marchant.
There will not be many people in The Club today who will remember Tony Keel who recently died on his 85th birthday.
Tony and I first played together at Nunthorpe Grammar School, before going on to play for the Railway Institute in the York Senior League, and then joined the York Club in 1960.
He was one of the finest bowlers to ever play at York, bowling medium pace with remarkable accuracy and great variations in his pace.
He bowled a slower ball with no discernible change in his action and baffled batsmen over many seasons.
He had a safe pair of hands fielding either at slip or short leg.
His finest day was against Leeds at Headingley in the mid 1960’s when he took 9 wickets and was denied all 10 when John Taylor claimed the last man.
He was a fine person and a fine cricketer.
